QUESTION ONE
a) Define the term project management (2 Marks)
b) Why do we carry out monitoring and control on a project? (3 Marks)
c) Describe THREE different approaches to estimating effort for an IT system
development project. (6 Marks)
d) Explain what the difference is between project risks and business risks (2 Marks)
e) Describe THREE differences between quality assurance and quality control.
(3 Marks)
f) Describe THREE ways in which the success of a system can be measured after it
has become operational. (3 Marks)
g) List and explain FOUR key skills that a project manager should have. (4 Marks)
h) Name FOUR criteria by which a project can be judged a success. (2 Marks)
i) The project feasibility study presented to senior management must always contain
a detailed cost justification for any proposed computer system. Categorise and
provide examples of costs and benefits that would appear in such a report
(5 Marks)

QUESTION TWO
Your company is expanding rapidly and has decided to buy in and install an off-the-shelf
(O-T-S) ledger package to replace the existing manual system. This will need new
equipment and network cabling throughout the offices. You are to manage this project.
You have drawn up an outline project plan to include the following main tasks:

L Load data and implement the new system. 3 G.K
a) Draw a work breakdown structure (WBS) diagram for the project, to show all the
planned tasks. This WBS should contain at least two levels. (4 Marks)
b) Draw a network diagram for the project, showing all dependencies and floats and
highlighting the critical path. (6 Marks)
c) Draw a gantt chart for the project (5 Marks)
d) At the end of week 24, tasks A, B, C, D, H, I and J have been completed on
schedule, and task E is continuing on schedule. However it is realised that task F
will now take 3 weeks, starting from week 28. Re-draw the Gantt chart to reflect
this progress to date, making any necessary changes (5 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
a) Assume you are a software project manager, the team working under your
leadership is going slow, getting behind schedule, results delivered late, and some
how pushed to work. What do you think could be the problem(s), the causes of
that problem and how can you solve that problem. (6 Marks)
b) Discuss six resources needed in software development projects (6 Marks)
c) State and explain four inter-task dependencies. (4 Marks)
d) State and explain two causes of failed projects. (4 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR
a) Using examples, explain the project management techniques that could be used
to: (6 Marks)
i. Record the activities required for a given IT project and how they are broken
down;
ii. Record the dependencies between the activities required for a given IT
project, and how such relationships affect the overall timescale of a project;
iii. Record the schedule of activities for an IT project and the staff resources
required to undertake such activities.
b) Explain how the use of structured development methods can assist in the
application of the techniques you have identified in part ‘a’ (5 Marks)
c) As a project manager you are requested to perform the effort estimation of an Air
–Traffic Control project. The mode is embedded.
The following project information is available:
The software has three modules with 5KLOC, 2KLOC and 3KLOC respectively
COCOMO model

QUESTION FIVE
You have been asked to assemble a project team for a development project. You will
require analysts, programmers and testers. There is an IT Department at the company
doing maintenance and support. You have been told that you will be able to get about
half the team you require from here and the other half will be hired from outside.
a) Describe FIVE key steps in the recruitment process from a staffing vacancy being
identified to putting a new effective team member in place. (10 Marks)
b) List FIVE factors you would take into account when deciding who should do
which task in a plan. (5 Marks)
c) The team members from the IT Department have been working on their tasks for
a month when the newly hired external analysts and programmers join. There is
then a decrease in the productivity of the existing staff. What could explain this?
