QUESTION ONE

(a) State the four reasons for learning statistics in medical investigation.
(4 mks)

(b) The mean of the number of patients over in the 1st quarter in a hospital is 87 and standard deviation is 5. The mean of patients in the 2nd quarter was 5225 and standard deviation is 773. Compare the variations of the patients in the two quarters. (7 mks)

(c) Define the following terms as used in medical statistics (8 mks)
i. Population
ii. Sample
iii. Categorical variables
iv. Binary variables

(d) A job place director claim that the average starting salary for nurses is Kshs. 24,000/=. A sample of 10 nurses has a mean of Kshs. 23,450/= and standard deviation of kshs. 400. Test the director’s claim at (6 mks)

(e) The following data were collected on the number of blood tests a local hospital conducted for a random sample of 50 days. Find the mean, meridian and mode of the blood tests. (5 mks)

(a) Determine the geometric mean of 3, 4, and 9; harmonic mean of 1,4,5 and 2 and weighted mean of:

(c) The following is a data set for plasma volume measurement. Find the standard deviation of the plasma volume (5 mks)

QUESTION THREE
A researcher tests three different branch of breakfast drinks for the number of multi equivalent of potassium per quart each contain. The following data are obtained
Brand A: 4.7, 3.2, 5.1, 5.2, 5.0
Brand B: 5.3, 6.4, 7.3, 6.8, 7.2
Brand C: 6.3, 8.2, 6.2, 7.1, 6.6
