CASE STUDY

The social function of education has also been analysed with reference to its possible contribution to economic development. Considerable research has been carried out in this field but the relationship between education and economy is still to be precisely defined.

In the popular mind education and affluence are usually associated. Rich countries boast of advanced educational systems while poor countries are educationally backward.

The argument that education leads to economic development rests on two assumptions

i. Education changes behavour

ii. Such changes results in the production of more goods and services.

Reference has already been made that a greater amount of education leads to higher incomes but there is no form evidence that those with higher educational attachments are better and because of their higher productions. It could be that education is being used there to merely convene a criterion for selecting persons with aptitudes such as greater flexibility motivating imitative and problem motivation initiative and problem adaptive. These attributes are certainly a help to productivity but the is no proof that they are generated by education.

Finally education has to compete in growth terms with other areas of investments. It is arguable for instance that the building of roads and power stations may contribute more to economic growth compared to educational investment but general education should be distinguished from specialized expertise for doing specific jobs certain technical training is necessary. The requisite training is said to contribute towards economic development.
