STAGE I EXAMINATION FOR THE CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
DIT 0104: DESKTOP PUBLISHING
DATE: AUGUST, 2012 TIME: 1hr 30min
INSTRUCTIONS: This paper contains two Sections. Section A is theory while Section B is practical.
SECTION A
Question One (20 marks)
a) Define the following terms:
i. Desktop Publishing (DTP)
ii. Page layout software
iii. Manuscript
iv. Editor [1 mark each]
b) List FOUR Desktop publishing software packages by Adobe. [4 marks]
c) Explain briefly the following key elements of the communication process:
i. Sender
ii. Recipient
iii. Medium
iv. Noise [1 mark each]
d) i. Give TWO similarities of a magazine and newsletter. [2 marks]
ii. Give TWO differences between a brochure and flyer. [2 marks]
e) Discuss briefly the following levels of editing appropriate for different stages of manuscript development.
i. Structural and stylistic editing. [2 marks]
ii. Copy editing [2 marks]
SECTION B (PRACTICAL) – 40 MARKS
You are required to create and design a magazine by performing the following tasks. (The practical work will earn you 30 marks while a write-up for each of the ten tasks will earn you 10 marks.
a) Create a folder on the desktop and give it your registration number as its name.
[2 marks]
b) Create a magazine using Ms publisher by selecting the ‘brocade’ installed template.
[3 marks]
c) Save the publication as “Kisii CBD magazine” in your folder. [2 marks]
d) Give your magazine the title “THE MIRROR”. Insert today’s date into the magazine.
[2 marks]
e) Import the lead story from the “Kisii CBD” folder on your desktop into page 1. Link this story to page 2. [5 marks]
f) Delete all the pictures from page 2. Insert the image from “Kisii CBD” folder into this page. [4 marks]
g) Resize this image to an approximate size of 1’’ by 1’’. More it to the middle column of the upper section of the page. Wrap the picture so that the style is ‘fight’. [3 marks]
h) Import the logo from “Kisii CBD” folder into page 1, and move it to the top left position.
[2 marks]
i) Insert a shape called ‘explosion 1’ under ‘stars and banners’ category. Add the text ‘50/= to this shape. [3 marks]
j) Change the page design to an aqua scheme and the page background to 30% tint of accent 2’. [4 marks]
