INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions.

QUESTION ONE COMPULSORY (30 MARKS)
a) Explain the characteristics of a general system. [5 Marks]
b) Explain the four people who comprise the system development team. [4 Marks]
c) Different information systems serve different levels of the organization. Discuss the
information systems that serve the operational and tactical levels of the organization giving
characteristics, inputs and outputs unique to each. [8 Marks]
d) A feasibility study is a short-focused study aimed at establishing the practicability of
Information Systems development projects. Describe FOUR such feasibility tests that must be
undertaken before the initiation of the project. [4 Marks]
e) When a patient arrives at View park Surgery with a repeat prescription request, the
receptionist checks the prescription file and writes out a prescription. This has to be
authorized by the doctor before being passed to the resident chemist for dispensing. The
chemist then gives the prescription to the patient. If the patient is entitled to free prescriptions,
the chemist verifies this and fills in the appropriate details on a form, which is filed in the free
prescriptions file. Otherwise the chemist takes the appropriate amount of money from the
patient and gives them a receipt. Draw a DFD. [5 Marks]
f) Briefly explain FOUR system implementation strategies. [4 Marks]

a) Explain what you understand by the term CASE TOOLS. [2 Marks]
b) What are the key benefits of using CASE TOOLS? [5 Marks]
c) Read and understand the following narrative description.
Required: Draw an ERD that expresses the requirements for the database.
[5Marks]
A university wants to set up a database to record details about its staff, and the departments they
belong to. They intend to record the following information:
• For each member of staff, their staff identity number, name, job title, and salary.
• For each department, its name and address.
• For each member of staff, all departments that they belong to. It is required that every member
of staff belongs to at least one department.
• For each department, the head of department. It is required that each department has exactly
one head of department.
d) Barclays Bank Members’ Club sells products to its members. The club wants to develop an
inventory system to track the goods sold to the members. Members usually order for the
product.
Using the knowledge, you have acquired in data modeling answer the following questions:
i. List the number of entities in this narrative [2 Marks]
ii. Draw the Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) to capture the narrative [6 Marks]
e) Explain FIVE challenges a system analyst is likely to go through during system
development, [5 Marks]

Disadvantages for each. [9 Marks]

b) What are the main steps in system development life cycle?

c) You are in the panel of interviewers that seek to recruit a system analyst for the organization
that you work for. Explain the qualities you would want for your preferred candidate.

QUESTION FOUR
a) Develop a use case diagram for the following scenario
A user can request a quiz for the system. The system picks a set of questions from its database,
and compose them together to make a quiz. It rates the user’s answers, and gives hints if the user
requests it. In addition to users, we also have tutors who provide questions and hints. And also,
examiners who must certify questions to make sure they are not too trivial, and that they make
sense. [6 Marks]

QUESTION FIVE
a) A product is passed as fit for sale if it passes a mechanical test and an electrical test and has
the correct dimensions. If it has the correct dimensions and fails the mechanical test or the
electrical test (but not both), it is sent back to the workshop for repair. In all other cases, the
product is rejected
