QUESTION ONE
It is July, six months after your graduation and you have finally secured a job. The company
was not your first choice but since job openings are scarce, you are pleased to have a job in
your field. You soon discover that the ICT resources in your company are limited; the only
resources are some aging hardware and outdated software that go with them. You do not have
a specific work station and your boss is not committed to providing the much needed
guidance to settle down. In fact the behaviour of your colleagues demonstrates that they were
not expecting a new staff in the ICT department.
You downplay the situation and focus on making a positive difference. You report to work
diligently and strive to serve customers. You have used your own resources to develop new
software which you hope will be a welcome initiative. Your probation period is soon coming
to an end. The frustration is building because every idea you have suggested for new ICT
hardware and software has been met with the same response “There is no money in the
budget for that”. As you ponder over your situation you cant help but consider other
alternatives…..
a) The gaps in the above scenario are associated with which HR function (2 Marks)
b) Identify four organisation related gaps depicted in the scenario above (4 Marks)
c) Suggest four remedies to the above problem (4 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
Babei has finally landed a job of training new staff on basic computer skills. Most of the
trainees are manual labourers who are advanced in age. After three training sessions, Babei
discovers that the trainees are ‘just showing up’ for training. There is a bit of grumbling
whenever you give an assignment, you are met with excuses. Only three trainees demonstrate
effort. In fact their assignments are outstanding.
a) In reference to learning and development, suggest five methods which Babei can
adopt to attain positive results. Justify each answer. (5 Marks)
b) Identify which theory of learning is associated with the methods you have identified
in a) above (5 Marks)

QUESTION ONE
XYZ Company is an established multinational which has recently opened an office in
Nairobi. Its services are in the telecommunications sector. In order to set up in Nairobi, it
bought shares in PIPO Ltd . However, it is emerging that a thorough feasibility study was not
conducted to inform the expansion plans. For instance, most of the staff inherited from PIPO
Ltd are semi-skilled. PIPO ltd was grossly overstaffed. XYZ Company may have to employ
more Kenyan citizens with skills in software development. The management projects a steady
growth within five years.
a) With reference to HR planning function and Health and Safety function, describe the
necessary activities that XYZ company will have to undertake urgently in order to roll
out its operations in Nairobi, Kenya. Support each answer appropriately.
