QUESTION ONE – COMPULSORY (30 MARKS)
a) Define the term project management. (2 Marks)
b) Why do we carry out monitoring and control on a project? (3 Marks)
c) Name FOUR criteria by which a project can be judged a success. (2 Marks)
d) What are the three project activities that are needed for WBS? (3 Marks)
e) Describe THREE different algorithmic techniques for estimating effort for an IT system
development project. (6 Marks)
f) Identify and explain TWO advantages of using a Gantt chart in comparison with a network
diagram, and TWO advantages of using a network diagram compared with a Gantt chart.

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a) Describe five techniques for undertaking a cost benefit analysis used when performing
economic feasibility. (10 Marks)
b) There are some projects that will be given approval even though the costs exceed the
benefits in the business case. Describe FIVE examples of when this might be legitimate.

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)
a) Draw a network diagram for the project, showing all dependencies and floats and
highlighting the critical path. (10 Marks)
b) Draw a gantt chart for the project. (5 Marks)
c) Task E is delayed and starts 4 weeks after the scheduled time. Re-draw the Gantt chart to
reflect this progress to date, making any necessary changes. (5 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
a) There is a marketing-research project containing a focus group interview and a
questionnaire survey with 200 responders. The survey is based on the analysis of the focus
group results. For the focus we have to gather the participants (7 days), organize the event
(place, time, equipment etc. – 2 days), implement the interview (1 day), record the
interview (2 days), analyze it (3 days) and write a brief research report for the
client/sponsor (1 day).For the survey we have to construct the questionnaire (2 days),test
and modify it (1 day), do the sampling (2 day), train the interviewers (1 day), fieldwork (2
days), record the data (1 day), analyze the data (2 days) and write the final study (3 days).
The project manager wants to keep a 5 days buffer time for safety at the end of the project.
i) Draw a work breakdown structure (6 Marks)
ii) Formulate a statement of work from the description (6 Marks)
b) The project feasibility study presented to senior management must always contain a
detailed cost justification for any proposed computer system. Categorize and provide
examples of costs and benefits that would appear in such a report (6 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a) Assume you are a software project manager, the team working under your leadership is
going slow, getting behind schedule, results delivered late, and some how pushed to work.
What do you think could be the problem(s), the causes of that problem and how can you
solve that problem. (12 Marks)
b) State and explain four causes of failed projects. (8 Marks)
