QUESTION ONE
a) It has been argued that knowing when to reference is as important as knowing how to
reference because of the importance of the practice in academic writing. Identify four
reasons why referencing is required. (4 Marks).
b) As a way of acknowledging sources of information in academics, one will be required to
prepare citations and references or bibliography. Define citations and differentiate
references and bibliography (4 Marks).
c) Discuss plagiarism as an academic vice and suggest three ways to avoid plagiarism.
(7 Marks).

a) The following small illustration was picked from a journal article by Xiaolu Hu, Zhang Yi
and Luping Ji on page 23. You are required to use the extract to construct a direct citation
and a paraphrased citation. (4 Marks)
b) Using the above extract, prepare the reference entry for the journal using the APA
referencing style. (6 Marks)

What is your understanding on information searching? With illustrations where applicable,
discuss the use of Boolean operators and truncation as search strategies that can be applied in
